Building an Inclusive Workplace: Mastering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Overview

Reimagine Talent's is a hiring agency that creates custom solutions to supports organizations in building workplaces of belonging. As an Educational Consultant I had to design and develop a course that helps cultivate a work environment where employees grow and thrive as you value and celebrate unique differences in background, experiences, skillset, and perspectives.To solve this problem, I designed a course, Building an Inclusive Workplace: Mastering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, that introduces participants to the key concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). It helps learners understand how biases are formed and how they impact interactions in the workplace. The course covers topics such as identity, emotional intelligence, and the systems that contribute to inequality. By the end, participants will have a solid understanding of DEI principles and how their personal backgrounds shape their views and actions.

Audience: Corporate employees looking to enhance their understanding of DEI principles and contribute to a more inclusive work culture.

Process

During the initial analysis phase of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) course development, I engaged key stakeholders, including organizational leaders and DEI specialists, to explore the central question: “What barriers are preventing employees from fostering a more inclusive work environment?” Using input from subject matter experts and research on bias and inclusion, I mapped out the critical concepts necessary for employees to promote equity and diversity in their workplace. This mind map formed the foundation for the re-focusing of the learning objectives.

In the design and development phase, I was provided a style guide to align the course visuals expectations. Once the outline was approved, I developed interactive exercises, designed to challenge learners’ perspectives on DEI and encourage critical thinking discussions and created a draft course. After gathering feedback on the draft, I focused on refining the content, completing development, and conducting usability testing to ensure the course effectively meets its objectives.

An additional infographic resource was developed to be used as a poster in the organization's office, to help re-enforce the DEI perspectives.
